Greta McMurphy
Class of 2028
I’m Greta McMurphy, a Level 10 gymnast from Alabama! College has been the goal since age 4 before I really knew what a scholarship was! I’m a full time student athlete with 40 hrs on campus plus my gym training. I utilize tutors, study groups, physical therapy, nutrition plans, bible study and church to stay supported and grounded. I want a group of coaches and teammates to continue that strategy helping to balance the increased rigor of collegiate athletics while preparing for life after gym!
Episode Recap
In this episode of The Championship Corner Podcast, Ryan Romano sits down with Greta McMurphy to get to know the person and competitor behind the gymnast.
Greta describes herself as someone others often call “bubbly” and “sunshine.” Interestingly, she wasn’t always that way. Growing up, Greta was extremely shy and introverted, but over time—especially after watching and learning from her outgoing older sister—she began coming out of her shell and developing the confident, positive personality people see today.
But when it’s time to compete, there’s another side of Greta McMurphy.
She is intensely competitive, hates losing, and prides herself on being an incredibly hard worker. Greta talks openly about one of the challenges she’s faced throughout gymnastics: sometimes caring too much about the outcome. She could hit routines consistently in practice, only to tighten up at meets because of the pressure she put on herself to perform.
This past season, however, Greta began making progress in that area. Despite dealing with an ankle sprain, she put together a strong season and earned the opportunity to compete at Nationals.
That competitive drive also runs in the family. Greta shares how her father’s experience competing in multiple Ironman races—including reaching the World Championship—has influenced her own work ethic and competitive nature.
As the conversation turns toward college recruiting, Greta explains what matters most to her in finding the right program. She wants more than an opportunity to compete. She’s searching for great team energy, a family atmosphere, and coaches who are genuinely invested in her as a person—not simply what she can contribute to a lineup.
Academics are equally important. Greta hopes to pursue pre-med with the long-term goal of becoming a dermatologist, making it important to find a school and coaching staff that will support her ambitions both inside and outside the gym.
When asked what makes her unique, Greta comes back to two qualities: her work ethic and her positivity. She’s the athlete who enjoys conditioning, wants to keep working when practice is supposed to be over, and genuinely loves the process of becoming better. At the same time, she wants her joy and love for gymnastics to positively impact the people around her.
The episode closes with Greta McMurphy sharing one of the most important foundations in her life: her faith.

- Hard work is part of her identity. Whether it’s gymnastics, conditioning, or school, Greta McMurphy takes pride in pushing herself and doing the work required to become the best version of herself.
- Great recruiting fits go beyond gymnastics. Greta McMurphy wants coaches who care about her development as a person and a team that feels like family—not simply a program where she can make a lineup.
